I help people make decisions about old buildings, and then see them through. Traditional buildings ask to be understood on their own terms. A solid-walled farmhouse, a lime-plastered manor, a brick tower mill, a pantiled terrace: each of these was built to its own set of rules and each fails in its own way, too. I have spent twenty years paying careful attention to old buildings to gain this understanding.

Looking carefully at old buildings for that long earns an understanding that the tells are already there, if you have learned how to find them. A crack has a cause, dampness has a route and plasterwork tells its own story.
